Why home visits work
Most of the stress of a vet trip happens before you arrive
The carrier, the car, the corridor of unfamiliar smells. Take those away and what remains is a calmer animal, a clearer examination and a conversation you are not rushing through.
No carrier, no car
Cats who hide at the sight of a basket, dogs who tremble in the waiting room and rabbits who travel badly are all examined where they already feel safe. A relaxed heart rate and a normal temperature also give us more accurate findings.
Time to examine properly
Our home consultations run long by design — usually up to an hour. There is space to watch how your pet moves around their own home, to go through diet and behaviour, and to answer the questions you would otherwise think of on the drive back.
The same two vets
You will see Joe or Rachael, not whoever is on the rota. We keep our own records, build a picture of your pet over the years and write care plans with you rather than handing you a leaflet.
Appointments that fit your day
Visits from 9am to 8pm on weekdays and 10am to 6pm at weekends. Useful if you work from home, have young children, care for several pets, or no longer drive.

A full nose-to-tail examination in your own home, with time to talk through anything that has been worrying you.
Preventative care & vaccinations
Annual boosters, kitten and puppy courses, flea, tick and worming plans — pet vaccinations at home, on a schedule we keep track of for you.
Animal Health Certificates
Official Veterinarian-signed paperwork for travel to the EU, completed at home within the ten-day window.
Senior pet health assessments
Twice-yearly checks for older cats and dogs, covering weight, joints, kidneys, blood pressure and quality of life at home.
Medical investigations & treatment plans
Blood and urine sampling, ongoing management of arthritis, diabetes, thyroid and heart disease, with referral arranged when it is needed.
End of life & palliative care
Gentle support in the final months, weeks and days, including home euthanasia in the room your pet loves most.

Joe and Rachael have spent nearly four decades between them in practice across the South East, in first-opinion consulting rooms, out-of-hours shifts and on farms. They started Sussex Home Vets because the best consultations they had ever given were the ones in people’s kitchens.
Between them they cover behaviour and anxious patients, senior medicine, pain management and palliative care. You will get to know both of them, and they will get to know your pet properly.

We are based in East Sussex and visit homes daily across the county and over the borders into Kent and Surrey. If your town is not listed, ring us — we often travel a little further for existing clients and for end of life visits.

Common questions about home vet visits
What happens during a home visit?
We arrive at an agreed time, take a full history and examine your pet wherever they are most settled — the sofa, a favourite rug, the kitchen floor. We discuss what we find, agree a plan with you, and dispense or arrange any medication needed. Most visits last around an hour.
Can you do everything a surgery can?
Almost everything that does not require a theatre or hospital ward: examinations, vaccinations, blood and urine sampling, medication reviews, health certificates and palliative care. For surgery, x-rays, ultrasound or overnight care we liaise with local practices we trust and stay involved in your pet’s case throughout.
Do you take on pets already registered elsewhere?
Yes. With your permission we request the clinical history from your current practice so nothing is lost, then take over routine and ongoing care from home.
Which animals do you see?
Dogs, cats and rabbits, and other small pets by arrangement. Multi-pet households are straightforward — we can check everyone in a single appointment.
What about out of hours and emergencies?
We visit Monday to Friday 9am–8pm and 10am–6pm at weekends. Outside those hours our emergency cover is provided by Vets Now, with branches in Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne.
How much does a home visit cost?
Fees depend on your location and what your pet needs, and you will always be given a figure before we visit. New clients can book a free one-hour welcome appointment so we can meet you and your pets at home.
